St Jerome
St Jerome was born in what is now Croatia. He studied at Rome and Alexandria, became a priest, a theologian, a historian, and a commentator on the Bible. At the request of Pope Damasus 1st he translated the Old Testament from the Hebrew into Latin which by the 4th/5th century had become the vernacular of the West.. He moved to Bethlehem where he became revered for his scholarship, his goodness (despite his struggle with patience) – and for his association with a lion! – and died on the 30th September 420. His translation – the Vulgate is still in use today.
Lord God,
Source of all wisdom and understanding,
We thank you for the life of St Jerome
who enriched your people with his goodness,
his devotion to and his translation of scripture.
May we be encouraged to revere your word as he did,
and to grow in faith by following his example.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen
