Archbishop Tartaglia, together with priests of the Archdiocese, concelebrated the Funeral Mass of Canon James Simcox at St. Joseph’s Home, Robroyston on 9 December. The presence of a large number of priests and of former parishioners, friends and family members from Ireland was testimony to the affection in which Canon Simcox was held. As Archbishop Tartaglia said in his homily, his lively and sociable presence would be much missed.
Canon Simcox was born in Cork in 1928 and after ordination, came to Scotland in 1953 as one of a large number of Irish priests who came to serve the people of Glasgow. He served in a number of parishes but was best remembered in Dumbarton (St. Michael’s) and Renton (St. Martin’s) where he served for a total of 40 years. Everyone who knew him had a story to tell of him.
