Mass

Intercessions

That, strengthened by our Lenten efforts, the Pope, the bishops and all christians
may experience the joy of receiving forgiveness from God and others,
and of forgiving others ourselves.
Lord, hear us

We pray that when we are trapped in selfishness and sin
We may find liberty through the Lord.
Lord, hear us

For people throughout the world,
but particularly just now in the Holy Land, Syria, Ukraine, Africa and the Middle East:
that they may be given a chance to live in peace, justice and security.
Lord, hear us

We pray for our families and friends,
for the sick in our community, and among our friends;
we pray for our dead including Alexander Green and Fr Terry Friel,
and for those who mourn.
Lord, hear us

Morning Prayer Ash Wednesday

This can be heard on radioalba.org Christian
at 8.00 and then on every hour and half hour until 11.30
It is followed at 8.15 and 8.45 and at every quarter past
and quarter to the hour until 11.45, by a schools Morning Prayer
from Our Lady of Good Aid Cathedral Primary School, Motherwell.

Introit: He will call to me and I shall answer with freedom and honour and length of days.
He will call to me. He will call to me.

All you sheltered by the Most High, who live in Almighty God’s shadow,
Say to the Lord, ‘my refuge, my fortress, my God in whom I trust.’

He will call to me and I shall answer with freedom and honour and length of days.
He will call to me. He will call to me.

Let us pray

Ever faithful God,
conscious of your love for us, we begin our Lenten journey.
Let this be a time of growth for us so that, enriched in our humanity,
we may become more like Christ.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Psalm 50 O God, you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart.

Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offence.
O wash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin.
O God, you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart.

My offences truly I know them. My sin is always before me.
Against you alone have I sinned; what is evil in your sight I have done.
O God, you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart.

A pure heart create for me, O God, put a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from your presence, nor deprive me of your holy spirit.
O God, you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart.

Glory to the Father, glory to the Son,
Glory to the Holy Spirit now and for ever. Amen.
O God, you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart.

Short reading Deuteronomy 7:6,8-9

It is you that the Lord our God has chosen
to be his very own people out of all the peoples on the earth.
It was for love of you and to keep the oath he swore to your fathers
that the Lord brought you out with his mighty hand
and redeemed you from the house of slavery,
from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
Know then that the Lord your God is God indeed,
the faithful God who is true to his covenant
and his graciousness for a thousand generations
towards those who love him and keep his commandments.

Canticle Benedictus Finlandia 1

Blest be the Lord the God of Israel,
who came to us; and brought us back from sin.
God raised for us a Saviour who is mighty;
his Saviour-Son from David’s house and line.
God promised this through holy men and women
who spoke for him down through the mists of time.

Prayers and Intercessions

Let us give thanks to God the Father for the season of Lent,
which starts today.
We pray that during this holy time
he may fill our hearts with the Holy Spirit and make them steadfast in love:
Lord, give us your Holy Spirit.

May we be fed and satisfied
by every word that comes from your mouth.
Lord, give us your Holy Spirit.

Although we would like to do great things for love
may we still respond generously to the tiny opportunities for love
that each day brings.
Lord, give us your Holy Spirit.

Give us the gift of self discipline and restraint
so that we can give more to our poorer sisters and brothers.
Lord, give us your Holy Spirit.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Guard us, Lord, as the apple of your eye.
Guard us, Lord, as the apple of your eye.
Hide us in the shadow of your wing.
Glory to the Father,
glory to the Son,
glory to the Holy Spirit
now an for ever.
Amen.

Support us, Lord, in our efforts during Lent
so that in doing battle against the spirit of evil
we may be armed with the weapon of self-denial.
We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.
Amen.

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm;
and may he lead us to eternal life.
AMEN
