An Ecumenical Morning Prayer for Lent
2018
There is one Lord, one faith, one Baptism,
there is one God who is Father of all.
There is one Lord, one faith, one Baptism,
there is one God who is Father of all.
Cantor Bear with one another in love and charity,
be humble, be patient, be selfless, be as one.
There is one Lord, one faith, one Baptism,
there is one God who is Father of all.
There is one Lord, one faith, one Baptism,
there is one God who is Father of all.
Welcome
Let us pray
Ever faithful God,
knowing of your love for us,
we make our way through Lent.
Let this be a time,
as we move towards Easter,
when we may become more like Christ
in loving you and each other.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
A reading from the 2nd Book of Chronicles 36: 14-16, 19-23
In those days, all the princes of Judah, the priests, and the people added
infidelity to infidelity, practicing all the abominations of the nations
and polluting the LORD’s temple which he had consecrated in Jerusalem.
Early and often did the LORD, the God of their fathers,
send his messengers to them,
for he had compassion on his people and his dwelling place.
But they mocked the messengers of God,
despised his warnings, and scoffed at his prophets,
until the anger of the LORD against his people was so inflamed
that there was no remedy.
Their enemies burnt the house of God, tore down the walls of Jerusalem,
set all its palaces afire, and destroyed all its precious objects.
Those who escaped the sword were carried captive to Babylon,
where they became servants of the king of the Chaldeans and his sons
until the kingdom of the Persians came to power.
All this was to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah:
“Until the land has retrieved its lost sabbaths,
during all the time it lies waste it shall have rest while seventy years are fulfilled.”
In the first year of Cyrus, king of Persia,
in order to fulfil the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah,
the LORD inspired King Cyrus of Persia
to issue this proclamation throughout his kingdom, both by word of mouth and in writing:
“Thus says Cyrus, king of Persia: All the kingdoms of the earth
the LORD, the God of heaven, has given to me,
and he has also charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.
Whoever, therefore, among you belongs to any part of his people,
let him go up, and may his God be with him!”
Psalm 136: By the waters we sat down and wept.
By the waters we sat down and wept.
We sat down by the rivers in exile
We remembered the homes we had left.
We could not sing our songs,
we could not play the harp.
By the waters we sat down and wept.
By the waters we sat down and wept.
Our oppressors made fun of our homeland.
‘Sing your songs of the land you have left.’
We could not sing the songs that Jerusalem loved.
By the waters we sat down and wept.
By the waters we sat down and wept.
May I never forget you, my country.
Let them jeer at my songs and the harp.
Let my tongue be unmoved,
Let my right hand be still.
By the waters we sat down and wept.
By the waters we sat down and wept.
Reflection: when so much is so wrong, we still live in hope
Harp Meditation
Intercessions
1 We ask that each of us may understand better the importance of praying. Lord, hear us
2 We ask that each of us may value self-sacrifice
so that we may offer our lives to God
and witness to God’s presence inn our lives. Lord, hear us
3 We ask that we may be more generous to people round about us,
to people in need. Lord, hear us
Let us pray
We ask that the peoples of the world
may be spared from the aggression and violence of so many who have been led astray,
And may be able to live hope-filled lives in harmony and peace, through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven . . . . . . . . . .
There is one Lord, one faith, one Baptism,
there is one God who is Father of all.
There is one Lord, one faith, one Baptism,
there is one God who is Father of all.
May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm;
and may he lead us to eternal life.
AMEN
