It is a fruitful year for Jubilee celebrations in the Archdiocese. On 29 June in St Paul’s Whiteinch, family, friends, fellow priests and former parishioners, as well as members of the parish community, gathered to celebrate with Fr Willie Monaghan the Golden Jubilee of his ordination. Outside the church, piper Duncan Fletcher played to welcome the congregation, and members of the St Mungo Singers came to support the music of the liturgy.
The church was full, and Fr Willie took great pleasure in welcoming by name his brother priests who had come to concelebrate, and some of the Little Sisters from St Joseph’s Robroyston who had looked after many members of his family.
Fr Willie expressed a sense of disbelief that he, “a wee boy from Garngad”, was celebrating 50 years of priesthood. He had great thankfulness, knowing the Lord was close to him (and to everyone) and that he had been given the opportunity to serve. He wished to all present the joy and happiness that he himself had experienced in his life.
After the Mass of Thanksgiving, all were invited to come to the parish hall to enjoy bountiful refreshments and chat.
‘Come follow me and I shall make you fishers men.’
