St Margaret Mary’s Church in Castlemilk was filled for the funeral of its former and much loved parish priest Fr Michael Savage on 19th January. Fr Michael had suffered from Parkinson’s for a number of years, retiring in 2019. Latterly he had also had Parkinson’s related dementia.
Archbishop Nolan presided at the Funeral Mass and was joined by many priests from across the Archdiocese. Fr Michael’s brother, Fr Mark, a Benedictine monk from Pluscarden Abbey, and other members of Fr Michael’s family were present. Unfortunately his sister, Dame Andrea Savage OSB, from Stanbrooke Abbey, was unable to be present but her voice was. She had recorded the psalm for the Mass. Members of the Archdiocesan choir were also present to support the music of the liturgy.
His long time friend, Fr Joe Sullivan, in his homily referred to the great influence the Schoenstatt movement had had on him and his long involvement with it, and fittingly his body had rested in the chapel at the Schoenstatt centre at Campsie before being brought to St Margaret Mary’s. Fr Michael had also dedicated his artistic ability to producing works for the church, including the chapel at Schoenstatt. Fr Joe said he had accepted his illness in a matter-of-fact way as just part of life, and now his toil was over.
In recognition of the support Fr Michael had received from Alzheimers Scotland, a collection was taken for their work at the end of the funeral Mass.
