Kay Dick RIP
On Tuesday 22 April 2025, as we came to terms with the death of Pope Francis, the St Mungo Singers had a loss of their own to mark, as they joined family and friends of Mrs Catherine (Kay) Dick at St Andrew’s Bearsden for her funeral. Kay, a member of the alto section of the choir for nearly 30 years, had died at the age of 92 in St Joseph’s Care Home. Her late husband, Eric, had also been in the choir. It was a tribute to Kay’s memory that, despite the demands of the previous week’s Holy Week liturgies, a good number of the choir attended.
In his homily, parish priest Fr Maloney recalled, as a young curate, meeting Kay in the 1990s at Gartnavel Hospital where she had been volunteering. She had, he said, many loves in her long life – teaching in many schools throughout Glasgow, her husband and family, her church, St Padre Pio and the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and the St Mungo Singers.
In the family address at the end of the Mass, we learned that Kay in fact had taken a degree in chemistry, followed by a qualification in microbiology, but her first love had been teaching and she changed career to follow that love. As many of us knew, Kay became responsible for setting up Padre Pio groups throughout the UK and organising pilgrimages to Italy. Her involvement in the St Mungo Singers continued into her 80s.
Knowing Kay, she will probably be organising the heavenly choirs now and ensuring that they have the correct music. Rest in peace, Kay
