On Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd September, members of the St Mungo Singers came together with family and friends of former member of the Choir, Irene Harkins, to mark her sad passing and take part in her funeral liturgies.

Irene was a well-kent figure in the Archdiocese, both in the Cathedral and many other parishes, and was involved in many aspects of parish life, including helping at Padre Pio Masses.  Her funeral Mass was attended by a number of the priests who had known her.  Principal Celebrant was Mgr Gerry Fitzpatrick. Also present to play harp music at both services was Catherine Walker who had been a friend for many years.

In his homily Mgr Gerry said that the readings chosen for the funeral Mass – Isaiah 25: 6; Romans 8: 31-35; 37-39 and the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus from St Luke’s gospel 24: 13-16;28-35  were obvious choices since Mass meant a very great deal to her and she was a lady with much fortitude..  As Christians, we grieve for loss but we believe in God as the giver of life and so we give thanks for the goodness seen in Irene’s life, and for the joy that is to come.

Requiescat in pace, Irene.
