Glasgow Cathedral

The second service of the Festival was held at Glasgow Cathedral and was attended by representatives of the member churches of Glasgow Churches Together, as well as members of their congregations, representatives of local and national government, the universities and the legal profession and other city services.  The Cathedral provided a beautiful venue for the service which was a wonderful mix of prayer in word and song, music and dance!  The City Council had provided tiered seating for the service and this gave a greater spatial focus. Advent at Nazareth House

December 22, 2011

Dr. Noel at the harp

As the St. Mungo Singers can tell you from their experience at Nazareth House, the small and less formal services can be just as wonderful as the more formal events at this time of year.  Some of the choir joined members of St. Joseph’s Tollcross choir to take part in an Advent service with the residents and their carers. Blessing of the Crib: Glasgow 2011

December 1, 2011

The Blessing of the Glasgow Crib

George Square, 5.30 Wed 7th December

Civic and Religious leaders of Glasgow gather on Wednesday next,  December 7th,
at 5.30 pm in George Square for a little Christmas  Service during which the splendid Glasgow Crib
is blessed and some prayers are said for the well-being of the city.

This  is a  truly ecumenical event, supported by the Gorbals primary schools – St Francis’ and Greyfriars
combined choir  -  with some supporting singers, a small Ensemble, and interested citizens.   All
are welcome, and despite the variable December weather, there is usually a large and joyfilled crowd.

It provides an opportunity for people, passing through the Square, or on a ‘visit to the crib’ to stop and reflect on
the deep meaning of Christmas and its implications for the human family, and to sing carols.

Intercessions (evening) for St Andrew’s Day 2011

Intercessions

God of Love,
your Son Jesus  called Andrew to ‘come follow me’
and he did.
From successful fisherman, he became a faithful disciple
bringing the good news to all he met.

Like Jesus, his Teacher, he accepted everyone, he took the initiative always ,
he made of every obstacle in life a springboard to loving you , always going
the ‘extra mile’ to the point of dying a martyr’s death. We honour Andrew for
the witness of his life, and are pleased to call him our national patron.
Today, with Andrew, we come before you in prayer:

We pray for our City tonight.
May we be inspired by Andrew
who left everything to follow Jesus,
to let Glasgow flourish by the preaching of Jesus’  word and the praising of Jesus’  name.
May all who visit Glasgow
be able to recognise a Christian people
who live out Jesus’ commandment to love one another.
We ask for special graces for all our civic and religious leaders,
that they might guide us in reconciling and respecting all,
in labouring for justice and peace and in attending to the needs of all your children.

Lord, hear us

We pray for our Scottish nation today.
May we be a community where everyone is valued,
where everyone is given their dignity because God is Father of us all
and therefore we recognise each other as brothers and sisters.
May we acknowledge the giftedness of our diversity
and use all our talents for the building up of a better future for all .

Lord, hear us

We pray for our world.
May Scottish people everywhere contribute to the common good of the people
in whatever nation they find themselves making their new home.
May we as a nation give our contribution to the fair and just development of all nations,
so that following the example of Andrew and the first Christians ,
everyone might have what they need  in order to live a fully human life.
May all peoples live in peace and harmony
recognising each other as children of the same Father.

Lord, hear us

We pray for all Christians in Scotland today.
Inspired by Andrew,
and those who down through the years brought us the Good News,
may we be rooted in our common faith and  baptism
and continue to be faithful witnesses  to Jesus.
May we strive to serve everyone in whichever way you invite us to.
May the cross become an ever clearer sign of our unity,
and may Jesus’ resurrection become an ever  greater source of common hope
in the full coming of your Kingdom.

Lord, hear us
