St. Matthew’s, Bishopbriggs, hosted the Annual Ecumenical Vespers for Easter on 24 May.  The service was attended by Archbishop Conti and the Very Rev. Gregor Duncan (Scottish Episcopal Bishop of Glasgow & Galloway), and a full congregation, despite the difficult weather. Read more

Strathclyde Police Annual Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving

The Annual Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving for the work of Strathclyde Police was held this year in St. Andrew’s Cathedral on 14 May.  The service was attended by serving officers of the Force, families and friends of deceased officers and members of staff, and representatives of the Churches in Glasgow.  Read more

The renovated St. Andrew’s Cathedral is full of light and colour and, on Sunday 8 May, it was also full of sound- the sound of singers (adult and children), musicians and dancers.  The occasion was, as part of the series of musical celebrations to mark the re-opening of the Cathedral, a service to honour St. Andrew and the other saints who are represented in the Cathedral. Holy Thursday 2011

The first Diocesan service since the re-opening of the Cathedral took place on Holy Thursday, with the celebration of the Chrism Mass.  The Cathedral was packed, with people standing at the back and around the sides, and some of the congregation getting a closer acquaintance with the choir in the choir loft than they might have wished. The Cathedral full of light and colour

St. Andrew’s Cathedral was re-opened and its new altar dedicated on 10 April 2011.  On the evening before, an ecumenical service of Vespers to celebrate the completion of the restoration work was held , attended by an invited congregation which included church leaders, national and local politicians (including the First Minister Alex Salmond), consular representatives, members of civil and educational organisations, and representatives of parishes throughout the Diocese.  As the guests gathered, a trio of instrumentalists played on violin (Clare O’Neill), clarsach (Carissa Bovill) and whistle (John Allen) a selection of Celtic melodies. St. Mungo Singers Requiem 2011

The St.Mungo Singers celebrated their annual requiem for deceased  members in St. Leo’s church on 25 March 2011.  They were joined by friends and family members for the service.  It was a warm and loving memorial, not a sad one, as they remembered with affection those they had known, sung and prayed with over the years. The weather has not been kind this year to us but, despite this, there was a good attendance at the Ogilvie Vespers held in St. Aloysius, Garnethill on 10 March.  The service was presided over by Archbishop Conti, and he was joined by members of the Jesuit community and by Provost Mgr. care sector took place in Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Cardonald, on 27 February 2011.  The principal celebrant, Archbishop Conti, was joined by Cardinal O’Brien, Bishop Cunningham of Galloway, and a number of priests.  Among the congregation were members of the Lourdes Hospitalite, doctors and nurses and many others from the healthcare services.

St. Aloysius

The annual Celtic Roots Mass, held during the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, took place in St. Aloysius Garnethill on Sunday 30th January 2011.  This year, in addition to regular participant choirs the St. Mungo Singers and St. Mungo’s Alloa, there were a number of other Glasgow choirs: St. Paul’s Shettleston, St. Maria Goretti, St. Joseph’s Tollcross and St. Andrew’s Cathedral, plus singers from Dunkeld and Motherwell Dioceses. The second event of the St. Mungo Festival was an ecumenical service held on Sunday 9 January at St. Mungo’s Cathedral, involving instrumentalists (Cathedral Strings, Rutherglen Salvation Army Band and clarsach player Carissa Bovill), choirs (Russkaya Cappella and St. Mungo Singers) and dancers (Visual Statement), as well as representatives of the church communities in Glasgow, the City Council and the Scottish Parliament.
