For the Feast of St Mungo, patron of Glasgow
January 13th 2011

The Church’s official Morning Prayer for the Feast of St Kentigern (Mungo) can be found in the Proper of Liturgy of the Hours.
Parishes may find this adapted form helpful as they make a start or continue their efforts to restore this feast to a warm part of
parish celebrations in the Archdiocese of Glasgow. We walk before we run, so perhaps some elements of either the official Morning Prayer
or of this shorter and adapted version, will be help us celebrate with devotion and delight either with a self-standing Morning Prayer or with
a form of Morning Prayer before Mass.

Invocation

O God, come to our aid: O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father, glory to the Son,
Glory to the Holy Spirit now and for ever.
Amen.

Psalm 62: O God, you are my God, for you I long.

O God, you are my God, for you I long,

for you my soul is thirsting.
My body pines for you, my God,
like a dry weary land without water.

O God, you are my God, for you I long.

I gaze on you in the sanctuary
to see your strength and glory,
for your love is better than life itself;
my lips will speak your praise.

O God, you are my God, for you I long.

On you I muse throughout the night,

on my bed I remember you,
for you have been my refuge
and your right hand holds me fast.

O God, you are my God, for you I long.

Hymn from the Book of Wisdom (tune: Sweet Sacrament Divine)

O God eternal One, who made the universe,
with all that it contains, its nature so diverse,
you gave its stewardship in trust for us to honour, to be just.
Send us your wisdom now. Send us your wisdom now.

We are your servants, Lord, both limited and frail,
pride in mere human skills seems all to no avail;
without the Wisdom you bestow we count as nothing here below.
Send us your wisdom now. Send us your wisdom now.

For Wisdom is of God, was there when all was made,
can understand God’s plan, explain what God has said,
Lord, heed our prayer to you today: teach us to know and love your way.
Send us your wisdom now. Send us your wisdom now.

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 13: 7-9a

Do not forget those who have had charge of you
and preached God’s word to you.
Contemplate the happy issue of the life they lived,
and imitate their faith.
What Jesus Christ was yesterday,
and is today,
he remains for ever.
Do not be carried aside from your course
by a maze of new doctrines.

Responsory:

or music:

A verse of the Benedictus

Blest be the Lord the God of Israel,
who came to us and brought us back from sin.
God raised for us a Saviour who is mighty,
his Saviour-Son from David’s house and line.
God promised this through holy men and women,
who spoke for him down through the mists of time.

Intercessions ( as in the Proper of Liturgy of the Hours )

or:

We pray for our city and its people:
that we may have sound government,
kindly and just leadership,
effective support in health-care, education, housing
and all the other services we need.
We pray that we may be justly proud
to belong to St Mungo’s City.
Lord, hear us: Lord, graciously hear us.

We pray for Glasgow Churches Together,
and for all the Churches in our city:
that they will continue to work
ever more effectively
for the unity for which Christ prayed.
Lord, hear us: Lord, graciously hear us.

We pray for the needs of our country,
for the Queen,
and for the governments in Edinburgh and Westminster,
and for all who hold public office.
Lord, hear us: Lord, graciously hear us.

We pray for the work of the United Nations
and for the other international bodies
established to help countries work together better.
We renew our support for the efforts made by our own country
to work with other countries to alleviate hardship and distress.
Lord, hear us: Lord, graciously hear us.

We pray for those who are sick, for those who help and care for them;
and we pray for our dead,
that they may be at peace of the Kingdom of God.
Lord, hear us: Lord, graciously hear us.

Our Father. . . . . . . . …

Let us pray

O God, who through the Bishop St Kentigern
caused the light of the true faith to shine forth
in all its splendour by the preaching of the word,
grant, we pray,
that by loyal adherence to the teaching of him
whose venerable feast day we celebrate,
we may attain the glory of everlasting light,
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm;
and may he lead us to eternal life.
Amen
