Introit (Psalm 2:7)

The Lord said to me; You are my Son;
I have begotten you, begotten you this day.

God speaks to the earth, the word speeds forth.
God speaks his word to Jacob, to Israel his laws and decrees.

The Lord said to me; You are my Son;
I have begotten you, begotten you this day.

Let us pray
Lord God, you have fulfilled the promise,
And the people that walked in darkness have seen a great light.
Let your light shine out over all peoples today
and enable them all to enjoy the gift of peace
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen

Psalm 95

Today a Saviour is born for us, he is Christ the Lord.
Today a Saviour is born for us, Jesus Christ.

O sing to God a song that is new! Sing, heav’n and earth!
Proclaim the joy of his help this day! Sing praise to God !
Today a Saviour is born for us, he is Christ the Lord.
Today a Saviour is born for us, Jesus Christ.

Rejoice, you seas and thunder his praise! Sing, heav’n and earth!
For gift of the land and fruit that it bears! Sing praise to God!
Today a Saviour is born for us, he is Christ the Lord.
Today a Saviour is born for us, Jesus Christ.

O shake with joy, you trees of the wood! Sing, heav’n and earth!
Our king has come to bring justice and peace ! Sing praise to God.
Today a Saviour is born for us, he is Christ the Lord.
Today a Saviour is born for us, Jesus Christ.

Short reading Hebrews 1:1-2

At various times in the past and in various different ways,
God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets;
but in our own time, the last days,
he has spoken to us through his Son,
the Son that he has appointed to inherit everything
and through whom he made everything there is.

Canticle Benedictus 4

And you, my child, are favoured by the Most High:
you shall be called a prophet of our God.
You shall go forth as herald from the Lord,
and shall prepare the ways on which he comes.
You shall make known the wonders of salvation
to everyone called chosen by the Lord.

Prayers and Intercessions

Let us celebrate the name of the Word of God
– existing before time began, born into time for us.
Let us cry out in delight: – Let the earth rejoice, for you have come.

Christ, eternal Word, your coming saturated the earth with joy:
let our hearts be constantly happy, because you have come.
Let the earth rejoice, for you have come.

Christ, our Saviour, your birth showed us how faithfully God keeps his promises:
may we faithfully keep the promises of our baptism.
Let the earth rejoice, for you have come.

Christ, King of heaven and earth, whose peace the angels announced to us:
enfold us always in your peace. – Let the earth rejoice, for you have come.

Christ and Lord, you are the true vine, bearing for us the fruit of life:
let us be true shoots from that vine, never separated,
always fruitful. – Let the earth rejoice, for you have come.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

The Prologue of the Gospel of John

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God,
and everything was made through him that was made;
in him was life and that life was the light of men,
and that light shines now in the darkness.
Jesus, Redeemer, Lamb of God.
You are with me always, you are my Lord.

The light to all men had come to the world,
and the world though made by him, did not know him.
His own people knew him not, but to all who believed
he gave power to become the children of God.
Jesus, Redeemer, Lamb of God.
You are with me always, you are my Lord.

And the Word became flesh and lived among us,
full of grace and truth; we’ve seen his glory.
He is the only Son of God, who has given us himself,
in Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Jesus, Redeemer, Lamb of God.
You are with me always, you are my Lord.

Let us pray

Almighty God,
your incarnate Word fills us with the new light he brought to us.
Let the light of faith in our hearts
shine through all that we do and say.
We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.
Amen.

Blessing

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm;
and may he lead us to eternal life.
AMEN

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant.
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
come and behold him, born the king of angels:
O come let us adore him (3) Christ the Lord.

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation,
sing all ye citizens of heaven above.
Glory to God in the highest:
O come let us adore him (3) Christ the Lord.
