Glasgow the Welcoming City: Glasgow City Chambers, 18th June at 3.00

Glasgow the Welcoming City: a celebration in the City Chambers June 18th at 3.00 – all are welcome 2017 Welcoming City Poster The event was set up about 15 years ago at the request of the then Lord Provost, Bailie Liz Cameron, as a way of showing Glasgow as a place of welcome to visitors, refugees and asylum seekers. Each year we have a theme and this year it is Culture, Heritage and Diversity. We have someone from the Polish Consulate speaking, hopefully the Consul, or his representative. A Polish folk group will play as will the South Side Fiddlers, a group of mainly primary school children, from St Denis’ Primary will sing a tribute to Nelson Mandela composed for when he visited Glasgow and part of West George St took his name, Nelson Mandela Place. A Piper will play outside the Chambers, The Rutherglen Salvation Army band will play inside, a music ensemble, which includes Whistle, Fiddle,Harp and Guitar will share the accompanying, the singing will be led by the St Mungo Singers under the direction of Mgr Gerry Fitzpatrick and Dr Noel Donnelly and accompanied by organist Jacqueline Barrett. The event is organised by Glasgow Churches Together and hosted by the Lord Provost’s office who provide the refreshments afterwards in the Satinwood Suite overlooking George Sq with music provided by the South Side Fiddlers.
